How to Use the Dietetics Inclusive Centralized Application Service (DICAS) for Your Dietetic Internship Application

If you’re a nutrition student aiming to become a registered dietitian, you know that getting into a dietetic internship (DI) program is a critical step in your career. One of the most important tools to navigate this process is the Dietetics Inclusive Centralized Application Service, commonly known as DICAS. This online portal makes the application process easier by streamlining your submission to multiple DI programs. However, to make the most of it, it’s essential to understand how to properly use DICAS. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the steps to ensure your application stands out and is submitted correctly.

What is DICAS?

DICAS is an online application system that dietetic students use to apply for accredited dietetic internships across the United States. The platform allows you to apply to multiple internship programs with one application, which saves time and effort. By using DICAS, you can manage all aspects of your application in one place, including transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal statements, and more.

Step 1: Start Early

First and foremost, start early. The DICAS application process can be quite detailed, and leaving enough time to complete everything is essential. Begin by reviewing the DICAS website and familiarizing yourself with the deadlines. The general application periods are January to February for the Spring application cycle and September to October for the Fall application cycle, so it’s smart to start gathering materials and prepping your documents months before.

The Be Well Solutions Dietetic Internship participates in the Spring and Fall application cycles. If you’re interested in applying, be sure to check our Important Dates.

Step 2: Select Your Programs

One of the most important steps in DICAS is choosing which internship programs to apply to. Research the programs thoroughly—look at their websites, program lengths, focus areas, and selection criteria.

Not sure which programs to research? You can search available programs in DICAS and apply filters to find those that best suit your needs. Helpful filters include start term, program type, degree available, etc. Notice that you can apply to the Be Well Solutions DI-Only Pathway or the MS/DI Pathway!

You can also search for programs through the ACEND Accredited Dietetics Program Directory.

Step 3: Complete the Application Form

Before diving into the application itself, make sure you have all the necessary documents ready. DICAS provides a comprehensive application form where you’ll input various personal, academic, and professional information. Pay attention to detail when filling out these sections, ensuring everything is accurate and up-to-date.

The application includes:

Personal Information

  • Biographic Information
  • Contact Information
  • Race & Ethnicity
  • Citizenship Information
  • Other Information
  • Release Statement

Academic History

  • Colleges Attended
    • Need help on how to send your official transcripts? Check out the DICAS Applicant Help Center. Make sure your transcripts from all the colleges and universities you’ve attended are sent directly to DICAS. Request these early to avoid any delays.
  • Coursework Entry
    • DICAS provides a video on how to properly enter your coursework
  • Standardized Tests
    • Note: BWS DI does not require standardized tests to apply
  • Supporting Information
  • Achievements
  • Experiences
  • Memberships
  • Licenses and Certifications
  • Documents
    • Upload an updated resume that reflects your academic achievements, volunteer work, relevant experience, and skills.

We want to learn about you beyond your transcripts and GPA! So, regardless of your situation, whether you are a recent college graduate or a second-career dietitian, it is so important to ensure your application is completed in full and not to skip these sections!

Program Materials

  • Documents: This is where you will submit your Personal Statement and BWS DI Program Plan
    • Your personal statement is your chance to showcase why you’re passionate about dietetics and what makes you stand out as a candidate. Take the time to carefully craft a well-written, reflective personal statement. Tailor it to each program’s unique values and mission if necessary. Need help getting started with your personal statement? Check out our blog post for tips!
  • Recommendations: Enter the information for the individuals who will be providing letters of recommendation on your behalf
    • Most DI programs require at least three letters of recommendation. Reach out to professors, volunteer supervisors, or managers who know you well and can provide strong, personalized letters. Give them ample time to write and submit the letters.

If you have questions, make sure to utilize the DICAS Applicant Help Center. You can also reach out to bwsdi@bewellsolutions.com for guidance in completing your BWS DI application.

Step 4: Review and Submit

Before hitting “submit,” carefully review your entire application. Check for any typos, inaccuracies, or missing information. Double-check that your transcripts, letters of recommendation, and personal statement have been uploaded correctly. If your letters of recommendation, transcripts, and/or rotation schedule are still outstanding, that is okay! You can always confirm with the program that you are good to submit your application without those remaining pieces. Oftentimes, the admissions staff will appreciate an early look at your application before everything is submitted. Once everything looks perfect, submit your application to DICAS.

An initial $50 fee is owed to DICAS for setting up your application. For every application you submit on DICAS, a $25 fee is required, but the Be Well Solutions Dietetic Internship Program does not require any additional application fees to apply.

Step 5: Follow Up

After submitting your application, follow up with the programs to ensure they’ve received everything they need. Keep track of your application status through DICAS and stay on top of any additional materials or interviews required by the programs you selected.

The DICAS system is an essential tool for nutrition students applying to dietetic internships. Starting early, staying organized, and being thorough with each step can make a big difference in your application’s success. Best of luck, and remember, each step you take brings you closer to your dream of becoming a registered dietitian!
